Youth are the future of Southern Sudan and when motivated and focused have a combined energy that can power a village. The Werkok Youth Development Association (WYDA) believe that youth leadership development is vital to a healthy community. Youth and adults must work together to solve community-level problems of health, safety, education, and livelihood challenges. To integrate young people into the WYDA strategy for bringing clean water for healthy living to villagers, a “Youth and Water” program provides opportunities for young people to focus their energies. The program includes awareness education about water resources, healthy living practices, a forum for youth expression, and a structure for engaging youth in project development and management.
Beginning with the first water development project, youth from Werkok village will be guided in creating a vision for a village water system. They will learn to identify pivot points for well drilling and how to design a water system that keeps clean water free of bacteria to reduce contamination and water borne illnesses. Young people will learn about healthy hygiene practices and be directly involved in the design and building of sanitary facilities and waste water elimination systems.
A youth forum will be established with group leaders, forum facilitators, and guidelines for team activities management. This forum will be open to all young people up to the age of 18. A developmental approach will be taken to guide the roles and responsibilities of participants as they grow from child to young adult.
